La Verne is a tiny city located in Los Angeles County, California. The 2010 census revealed a population of 31,063 people, down from 31,638 in the 2000 census. The area's European history begins in the 1830s, when Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted Ygnacio Palomares the 15,000-acre (61-km2) Rancho San Jose property grant. Isaac W. Lord, an industrialist, bought a piece of Jose Palomares' land in the mid-1880s and persuaded the Santa Fe Railroad to extend its line across to Los Angeles. Lord surveyed the property for construction lots and held a massive land sale in 1887, christening the new town 'Lordsburg' after himself. He also built a big Lordsburg Hotel, but by the time it was finished, the land boom had passed. It stood unoccupied for several years before being purchased by four members of the German Baptist Brethren Church, who persuaded others in their denomination that it would be an ideal location for a new institution of higher learning. In 1891, Lordsburg College was established.
Residents produced field crops before planting citrus trees, which prospered when the town was founded as "La Verne" in 1906. Lordsburg became known as the "Heart of the Orange Empire," and La Verne thrived as a citrus center until after World War II, when the citrus industry began to fall away. The last two orange orchards are now located on the grounds of the La Verne Mansion and Heritage Park in La Verne, California.
